Dogs have two major shedding seasons every year, Fall and Spring. The reason why dogs shed a lot more during these seasons is because of the change in temperature. Dogs shed their fur in order to help control their body temperature and protect their skin.
Dogs with undercoats are more likely to shed excessively during the Fall and Spring. This is because they have two layers of fur; the long and coarse top layer, and the shorter, soft, and dense under layer.
Dogs with shorter coats shed lightly year-round, but they can still shed a lot during the Fall.
