Separation anxiety is an issue that many pet parents deal with on a daily basis. As the name suggests, separations anxiety occurs in pets in the absence of their parent. Anxiety can cause problems like excessive barking, urinating/defecating at home, or destructive behavior.
You can’t always be home with your dog, so it’s important to make them feel comfortable and confident when you are not there. Here are ways that you can make your dog feel at ease when you are not home.
How To Make Your Dog Feel At Ease When You’re Not Home
Make A Daily Routine
Dogs are less stressed and more confident when they have a daily routine. Having a consistent morning and nighttime routine can reduce their anxiety.
Go On a Long Walk Before You Leave
Going on a long walk with your dog will exert their energy mentally and physically.
Play Music For Your Dog
Studies have shown that Classical, as well as other genres of music like Reggae and Soft Rock, can reduce stress and anxiety in pets. It even promotes relaxation and enhances cognitive function. Youtube has many channels dedicated to music for dogs.
Use A Noise Machine
As an alternative to playing music, you can try using a noise machine for your pet while you are away. Noise machines can drown out external noise that can potentially stress your pet out.

Keep The TV On For Them To Watch
Another option is to leave the TV on for your pet. Play something that they are used to hearing, like your favorite TV series, so they feel like you are home.
Leave Them With An Article Of Your Clothing
If your dog is not allowed in your bedroom when you are not home, try leaving them with an article of your clothing so they have your scent. Having a “piece” of you can help reduce stress and anxiety. Make sure you leave them with clothing that does not pose a choking hazard, or one you don’t mind getting ruined if they destroy it.
