Shedding can be a big issue for dog parents, especially during warmer and colder months when they shed their coat the most. No one wants their home covered in dog hair, so here are 5 tips to reduce shedding in your dog.
Tips To Reduce Dog Shedding
1. Brush Your Dog Frequently
One way to reduce shedding is to brush your dog to remove the dead hair that gets caught in their fur. You should brush your dog once a day to once a month, depending on their coat size. Dogs with long and thick fur should be brushed more frequently.
Brush Types
Bristle Brush: Good for all coat types. For longer coats; use a brush with wider bristles. For coarse coats; use a brush with stiffer bristles.
Combs: Better suited for short-haired dog breeds.
Wire-Pin Brush: Best suited for thick and curly, wire-haired breeds.
Slicker Brush: Used to remove mats and tangles.
2. Feed A Healthy Diet
Feeding your dog food that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids will promote healthy skin and fur in your dog.
3. Keep Your Dog Hydrated
Dehydration is a cause of hair loss, so make sure that your dog has constant access and is getting adequate fresh, clean water daily. Here are other ways to keep your dog hydrated.
4. Bathe/Groom Frequently
Bathing helps remove dead skin and fur and is another way to reduce shedding. You can also use a deshedding shampoo and conditioner, which is especially helpful for dog breeds with undercoats.
5. Veterinary Attention
Excessive hair loss can also be a sign of a medical condition, such as autoimmune disorders, infection, allergies, parasites, or sunburn. Visit your veterinarian if your dog’s excessive shedding does not stop.
