The warmer weather is finally upon us, which means more outdoor time with our beloved dogs. Unfortunately this is also the time when fleas and ticks become active and when dogs are more susceptible to their bites. Keep reading to learn how to protect your dog from these blood-sucking parasites.

Fleas

Fleas are wingless insects that feed on blood and are capable of jumping as high as two feet. They prey on animals like cats and dogs, and can cause serious health issues. Prevention is the best way to combat flea bites.

Symptoms of Fleas Include:

  • Excessive scratching, biting on skin
  • Hair loss
  • Skin irritation, redness, hotspots
  • Tapeworm

Treatment For Fleas

If you think your dog has fleas take them to your veterinarian immediately for proper diagnosis. Treatment plan for fleas can include:

  • Topical or oral treatment
  • Thorough cleaning of your home
  • Lawn treatments

Ticks

Ticks are also a parasitic insect that feeds on blood. Ticks can be more dangerous than fleas as they can transmit diseases through their bites. Ticks live in grass and bushes, where they attach to your dog. They prefer to attach close to your pet’s head, neck, ears, and feet, but can be found on any part of the body. Regularly check your dog’s body for signs of ticks.

Symptoms of Ticks Include:

  • Anemia
  • Blood Loss
  • Skin irritation or infection
  • Lyme disease
  • Cytauxzoonosis
  • Tick paralysis

If your dog has ticks, take them to your veterinarian immediately. If your vet is not readily available, you can remove the tick yourself following these instructions.
