Breed Origin
Poodles are known as one of the oldest breeds created for hunting waterfowl. They were originally bred in Germany as retrievers, but the poodle breed was fully developed and gained popularity in France. They were created using different European water dogs, and thus the standard poodle was born. Smaller versions of the standard poodle were later bred in what is now the miniature poodle and toy poodle. Poodles have since been used to create hybrid breeds of dogs, such as the Cavapoo(King Charles Cavalier + Poodle).
Physical Characteristics
Coats & Colors
While poodles may vary in size and shape, their coat and colors are usually the same. Poodles are known for their distinct fur texture. Their coats usually come in white, black, or brown, with a dense, curly and wiry texture. It’s also important to note that poodles do not shed, making them very popular with people who have allergies.
Size & Weight
Standard Poodle: 15-22 inches in height | 40-70 lbs
Miniature Poodle: 10-15 inches in height | 10-20 lbs
Toy Poodle: 10 inches or less | 5-10 lbs
Temperament
Poodles are know for their friendly, playful, and protective nature; making them one of the perfect canine companions. Their gentle disposition also makes them great for people with small children.
Tips For Raising A Poodle
Obedience Training
Poodles are extremely intelligent. This makes teaching them new tricks and commands easy, but this also means that they can learn bad habits just as easily. Having your poodle professionally trained is recommended, especially if you are new to caring for a dog.
Grooming
Poodles’ curly and dense fur is very high maintenance, so it’s recommended to have them groomed frequently. If you are thinking of adopting a poodle make sure that you keep their grooming expense in mind.
Physical Exercise
Poodles may be calm and gentle, but their size (more so for Standard Poodles) requires them to get frequent physical activity. Lack of exercise can lead to behavioral issues and/0r destructive behavior.
