Breed Origin

The Chihuahua breed originated in Mexico and is named after the state of Chihuahua. It’s said that Chihuahuas are descendants of the Techichi, a now extinct breed of dog bred by the Toltec civilization in the 9th Century. Chihuahuas were officially recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1904.

Physical Characteristics

Coats & Colors

While Chihuahuas can come in a variety of colors, their coats only come in two types: smooth-coated and long-haired. Smooth-coated Chihuahuas have short fur that close to the skin, with longer fur around their neck. Long-haired Chihuahuas have long, smooth fur that can be flat or slightly curly. Their long fur fringes at their legs and ears.

Size & Weight

Chihuahuas can vary in size and weight from 3 pounds to 12 pounds. Mixed Chihuahua breeds are usually bigger in size that Chihuahuas that are pure bred.

Temperament

Chihuahuas are known for their bold personalities. They may be small, but they know how to make their presence known. Chihuahuas are also known for being anxious, separation anxiety being a big issue for them. If you choose to adopt a Chihuahua, make sure you have plenty of time to devote to them. Chihuahuas have a bad reputation for being yappy, but these pint-sized companions are extremely loyal and love fiercely. They are calm in nature, so a quiet and relaxing environment is ideal for them. Chihuahuas are smart, curious, and playful as well.

Tips For Raising A Chihuahua

Socialization & Training

It’s important to socialize and train your Chihuahua as early as possible. Chihuahuas who aren’t socialized with other dogs early in life can become unfriendly towards other dogs they encounter. Chihuahuas are easy to train and are very motivated by treats.

Exercise

Despite their size Chihuahuas still need frequent exercise, about 20-30 minutes daily. Chihuahuas enjoy long walks and running around grassy areas.

Health

Chihuahuas are prone to dental disease, so yearly teeth cleanings and daily brushing is vital in keeping your Chihuahua teeth healthy.
