Labor day weekend is here and that means barbecues, and fun times with friends and family. While you’re out there enjoying your long weekend, don’t forget to take some safety measures to make sure that your dog stays healthy and out of harm’s way during this time. Here are 8 Labor Day weekend safety tips all pet parents should follow:

1. Guard The Grill
Make sure to keep your dog away from the grill. Not only could they get their paws on human food that could make them sick, it also poses a risk of burn and poisoning.
2. Table Scraps
As tempting as those adorable puppy dog eyes are, avoid giving your dog table scraps during the weekend festivities. Likewise, keep an eye on food or drinks that are left on the table after eating. This is a cornucopia for dogs, but can lead to upset stomach, diarrhea, and alcohol poisoning.
3. Overheating
Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature the way that humans do. Make sure that your dog has a designated shaded area to relax and cool off. Keep an eye our for them throughout the day to check for potential signs of heat stroke.
4. Keep Fresh Water Accessible
Have a water bowl that is accessible to your dog and keep it replenished with fresh, cold water. Ideally this should be in a shaded area.
5. Cover The Trash
If your dog can reach the top of your garbage can, make sure to keep it tightly covered to avoid them ingesting anything that is potentially harmful, like animal bones.
6. Hot Cars
This goes without saying, but NEVER leave your dog in a hot car for any amount of time. A hot car is basically an oven when left in the hot sunlight.
7. Fireworks
If you expect to hear fireworks in your neighborhood, make sure that any exits are secure. Many dogs become extremely frightened/anxious in the presence of loud firework displays and try to escape the sound by running away.
8. Tag & Chip
Keeping an up-to-date tag on your dog and microchipping them is your best chance of being reunited with your dog should you become separated from each other.
