Welcoming a new dog into your home is an exciting time, but it’s important to have a plan ahead so you’re well prepared for their arrival. Here are some tips for welcoming a new dog into your home.
Buy Food & Supplies Ahead Of Time
Buy everything your new dog will need ahead of time. Do some research to find the right food for your specific dog breed/age. Set up their bed, toys, and food/water bowl in a space that will be theirs and make it comfortable for them.
Plan Arrival
If possible plan to pick up your new dog on a weekend. That way you will have a few days to bond with your dog and get them acclimated to their new life. When your dog first arrives at home keep them leashed and walk them around every room of your home, allowing them to sniff and get acquainted with their new surroundings.
Set A Daily Routine
Plan to walk and feed your dog at the same times every day. Dogs crave routine and knowing when a certain activity will happen puts them at ease. If you won’t be able to walk your dog during the day, hire a dog walker or put your dog in daycare. Dog City offers both daycare and walking services that are perfect for working pet parents.
House-Training
House-training your new dog is important, especially if they are a puppy. Even if your new dog is already house-trained, get a pee pad for your dog to use when they have to “go”. Teach your dog that they should relieve themself there. Accidents are bound to happen, so if your dog has an accident inside discourage them from doing that but never punish them for it. Doing so can negatively affect your bond with your dog.
