How Dog City Reunited A Lost Dog With Their Owner
A perfect example of how important microchipping your pet is happened to Dog City very recently. One afternoon last week, a Dog City handler noticed a dog wandering the street near our W 27th Street facility. The dog was brought into Dog City’s care, who immediately tried to identify the dog. The lost dog didn’t have any identification, but luckily Dog City had a microchip reader handy for situations like this. Unfortunately the dog owner failed to fill out their contact info for the microchip, so we had no way of reaching out to them directly. After contacting several microchip manufacturers Dog City was finally able to locate the dog owner’s contact info and get in touch with them. It turned out that the dog had escaped by jumping out of their owner’s car window. Both dog and owner were ecstatic to be reunited with each other.
This story is just another example of how microchipping can reunite lost dogs with with their families. But how exactly do microchips work?
The Science Behind Microchipping
So what exactly are microchips, and how do they works? Microchips are implantable computer chips, about the size of a grain of rice. They encode a unique identification number that, when scanned, transmits the data that is in the microchip. Studies have supported the use of microchips in pets as well. According to Science Daily, dogs who are microchipped are 2.5 times more likely to be reunited with their families than those without, and cats who are microchipped are 20 times mire more likely to be reunited than those without.
