The Spring weather is here, which means more outdoor activities to do with your dog! A trip to your local dog park can a fun way to get your moving and socializing, but there are some precautions to take as well. Read these dog park safety tips for fun and safe outing.
Dog Park Safety Tips
Update Vaccinations
Avoid potential exposure to disease by keeping your pet up-to-date on their vaccinations before a trip to the dog park. Puppies 4 months and younger should avoid dog park until they are able to receive all of their vaccinations.
Collar & ID Tag
This part is really important. A pet who is tagged has a much higher chance of being reunited with their owner if they are separated from one another. Keep your dog’s ID tag on at all times on your outings. Microchipping your dog is also highly recommended to keep track of your dog’s location.
Find The Appropriate Dog Park
Dog parks are usually separated into an area for large dogs and and area for smaller dogs. Make sure to take your dog to the appropriate park to avoid accidents. Bigger dogs can unintentionally hurt smaller dogs if their play is too overzealous. Some smaller dogs are also afraid of big dog, so avoid putting your dog in a situation that will make them uncomfortable.
Aggressive Behavior
Keep an eye on your dog at all times while at the dog park, making sure that play between them and other dogs remains friendly. If your dog or another dog shows aggressive behavior it’s best to leave before it can escalate further.
Bring Plenty Of Water
Have a bottle of water handy for when your dog gets thirsty. Just like us humans, dogs need to hydrate after physical activity. This is especially important on hotter days.
Heat Exhaustion
Beware of heat exhaustion when out with your dog. Signs of heat exhaustion include panting profusely, hypersalivation(excessive drooling), a bright red tongue, dry nose, rapid heart rate, vomiting, and more. Avoid being in direct sunlight for long periods of time.
