August 1st is National Yorkie Day! To celebrate, here are some fun facts about this spunky and lovable breed.

Yorkie Fun Facts

1. Officially named Yorkshire Terrier, the Yorkie name derives from Yorkshire, England, where the breed was first developed.

2. Yorkies were originally bred as working dogs, to hunt rats in mills.

3. A Yorkie’s coat is similar to that of human hair. They also shed very little, which makes them perfect pets for people with allergies.

4. Yorkies have an excellent sense of hearing, which makes them great watchdogs.

5. A Yorkie’s coat will change color as it matures. (Within its first 3 years of life)

6. A Yorkie named Smoky played and important role in WWII, warning soldiers of approaching enemies and delivering an important telegraph. Smoky also worked as a therapy dog, making rounds with nurses to lift the spirits of wounded soldiers.

7. Yorkies are one of the smallest dog breeds, and have held the record for smallest dog many times.

8. Audrey Hepburn made Yorkshire Terriers popular among celebrities when she brought her own Yorkie, Mr. Famous, into the spotlight with her. Mr. Famous was featured on magazine covers and even in her musical, “Funny Face.”
