It’s the holiday season once again, and that means decorating your home with festive decor to get into the holiday spirit. Unfortunately for many pet owners, this also means figuring out ways of keeping their dog from destroying or eating their Christmas tree and decorations. That’s why we’ve put together a list of ways you can keep your dog away from your Christmas tree, and keep them safe at the same time. While this list was made for Christmas decorations, you can use it no matter what holiday you are celebrating.
Keeping Your Dog Away From Your Christmas Tree
Surround Your Tree With A Gate
If your dog can’t help themselves and loves to mess with your Christmas tree, try placing a safety gate around it to prevent your dog from reaching it.
Low Hanging Ornaments
While it may not look very appealing, avoid placing ornaments on the very bottom branches of your Christmas tree. This will prevent your dog from reaching them and possibly eating them or injuring themselves with it.
Consider An Artificial Tree
Pine needles from real trees can be dangerous to dogs. The needles can puncture the lining of their stomach, and its oils can irritate the mucous membrane. While this may not be fatal, it’s still something you should avoid. Using an artificial Christmas tree can prevent the ingestion of pine needles, and is more ethical.
Use A Pet Deterrent Spray
Pet deterrent sprays are commonly used to keep dogs from going where they are not allowed. It works by using a scent that dogs find repulsive, thus deterring them from going any further. Try sprays like Grannick’s Bitter Apple Spray or Nature’s Miracle Pet Block Repellent Spray.
Tape Cords Down
If you are using lights you’ll likely have cords strewn about. If you do, we highly recommend taping down those cords. Doing this will prevent your dog from biting on them and getting electrocuted. This is something that unfortunately happens every holiday season, so it’s important to take the utmost precaution for your pet’s safety.
Anchor Your Tree
If you want to take the extra step to secure your tree in place, try anchoring it to the walls in your home. This will prevent it from being tipped over and causing a mess, or possibly hurting your dog.
All Other Decorations
For all your other holiday decorations, make sure that they are far out of your pet’s reach, like a high table or on a wall.
