The Yorkshire Terrier is known for their beautiful coat, adorable little body, and rambunctious attitude, but before they were the popular lap dog that we know them as today, they were used to hunt vermin for textile factories. Keep reading to learn more about the Yorkie.

Yorkshire Terrier Breed Guide:

Breed Origin

The Yorkshire Terrier gets its name from, Yorkshire, England, where they were originally bred in the early 19th century. They were bred using different terriers, including Black and Tan Terriers and Waterside Terriers. The first Yorkies served the working men of Northern England in order to help catch rodents in textile factories. The Yorkie soon became popular with the wealthy class. Soon after, Yorkshire Terriers made their way to the U.S. and the rest is history. Yorkies are still one of the most popular dog breeds in America and around the world.

Physical Characteristics

Yorkies average out at 7-10 inches tall and can weigh up to 7 pounds, making them one of the smallest dog breed in the world. The main characteristic that sets Yorkshire Terriers apart is their long, straight, and silky fur. Yorkie fur is actually very similar to human hair, making their coat semi-hypoallergenic. Their fur grows down to the ground, but is usually trimmed down. The Yorkie’s coat color comes in black or dark gray on their back, and golden tan on their limbs, ears, and face.

Temperament

Yorkshire Terriers are active little dogs, this goes back to their roots as rodent hunters. Yorkies can become rambunctious if they don’t get enough physical stimulation, or proper attention. They are a companion dog, so they require lots of attention from you and they aren’t afraid to let you know. Yorkies are known to be a little bossy at times, but their cuteness and cuddly nature more than makes up for that.

Tips For Raising A Yorkshire Terrier

Training

Training your Yorkie isn’t a difficult task to take on as they can pick up new tricks and commands fairly easily. Diligence is definitely required when training your Yorkie as they can be headstrong.

Grooming

The Yorkie’s long coat requires daily brushing to keep their fur tangle-free. They also need to be bathed once a week or every 2 weeks. Aside from shampoo, conditioner is also required when bathing your Yorkie because of their fine fur texture. The fur around their face and eyes should be trimmed regularly to avoid irritation and infection.

Health

Yorkshire Terriers are generally healthy dogs, but due to their delicate limbs they are prone to luxating patellas, which is when their knee cap pops out of place. Some Yorkies also develop deteriorating retinas.
