Breed Origin
The golden retriever breed originated in Scotland in the mid-1800s, where they were developed to retrieve waterfowl. They were first called yellow retrievers, because they were a cross between a yellow wavy-coated retriever and a water spaniel. Retrievers were officially recognized by the Kennel Club in England in 1911, and were officially known as golden retrievers by 1920.
Physical Characteristics
Golden retrievers are medium to large sized, with a distinct broad head and short ears. They have long, wavy fur that ranges in color from a pale-gold to a reddish-gold. Goldens are among the few dog breeds that are double-coated. Their double coat makes them natural-born swimmers, while also protecting the skin during the Winter and Summer months.
Temperament
Golden retrievers are known for being big goofballs. They love to play and are known for their friendly and happy-go-lucky personalities. They are highly intelligent and respond well to training. The Golden’s easy-going and friendly attitude make them popular among families with small children.
Tips For Raising A Golden Retriever
Golden retrievers may be chill and seem low-maintenance, but their size means they still require a lot of physical and mental activities. Lack of exercise can lead to destructive and even aggressive behavior, so make sure your golden is getting plenty of physical stimulation. Due to the vast amount of fur they have, you should brush your golden retriever regularly (at least monthly). This will prevent matting and help them shed excess fur.
