Breed Origin
As it’s name suggests, French Bulldogs descended from English Bulldogs in the 19th Century. This early version of the English Bulldog was brought over to France, where they were bred with Rat Terriers, thus creating the original French Bulldog. The breed quickly became popular among people of all economic or social status, and remains one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. They were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1898.
Physical Characteristics
The original Frenchie looks considerably different than the one we are familiar with today. The French Bulldogs that were originally bred looked more like Boston Terriers. Breeding over time has changed the Frenchie’s body, today they are shorter and wider in build. They are also known for their muscular and stout body, with a flatter snout.
The French Bulldog is a brachycephalic dog breed, or “smooshed face” dog. This is characterized by short, pushed-in snouts. This condition can create breathing issues with Frenchies and limits their physical activity. Due to this Frenchies sometimes need help regulating their body temperature.
Temperament
Frenchies are popular for being great companions. They love cuddles and spending time with their owner. They’re also known for their snoring, snorting, farting, and wheezing, which they do for pretty much anything they do. Another reason French Bulldogs are so popular is because of how scarcely they bark. This makes them good guard dogs, as they usually bark to alert you of something.
Tips For Raising A French Bulldog
French Bulldogs required extra care and attention due to their breathing condition and folds in their snout. Frenchies are also prone to food and skin allergies. Many French Bulldogs are surrendered every year to the the seemingly high maintenance care needs, so make sure that you are fully prepared to care for your Frenchie if you choose to adopt one.
