Giving your dog a bath at home can be a fun bonding experience—and with the right DIY grooming tips, it’s easier than you might think. Whether your pup rolls in mystery muck at the park or just needs a routine refresh, learning the basics of home grooming keeps them looking (and smelling!) their best between professional spa days.

1. Gather Your Tools First

Preparation is key. Have these items ready before your dog hops into the tub:

  • Dog-safe shampoo (avoid anything with harsh chemicals or human shampoo)

  • A non-slip mat

  • Soft towels

  • A brush or comb for their coat type

  • Treats for positive reinforcement

2. Brush Before You Wash

Brushing out tangles and loose fur before bath time makes shampooing more effective and prevents matting. It also gives you a chance to check for any skin issues, lumps, or bumps.

3. Lukewarm Water Is the Sweet Spot

Too hot or too cold can make bath time uncomfortable—or even harmful. Lukewarm water is ideal. Start rinsing from the neck down, avoiding the eyes and ears. You can use a damp cloth to gently clean your dog’s face.

4. Shampoo Strategy

Lather the shampoo well, paying special attention to the paws, belly, and rear. Let it sit for a minute or two (especially if it’s medicated), then rinse thoroughly—residue can cause itching and dryness.

5. Dry and Pamper

Towel dry gently, then either air dry or use a blow dryer on a cool, low setting if your dog tolerates it. Brush again to prevent tangles and fluff up that freshly-cleaned coat.

6. Stay Positive

Make bath time fun! Use plenty of praise and treats throughout, and keep sessions short and upbeat to reduce stress.
